As part of Volunteer Week 2024, Mohsen has shared with us what his experience is and what it’s like being a Maintenance Volunteer at Unicorn: 

My name is Mohsen, and I began volunteering at HMS Unicorn in December-2023. I am from Iran, a country with its own rich history that has always fueled my passion for heritage and preservation.

As a volunteer at HMS Unicorn, my role is that of a Deck Maintenance Volunteer. In this capacity, I am primarily responsible for tasks that ensure the ship remains in excellent condition for both preservation and visitor enjoyment. My duties include swapping and cleaning decks. The opportunity to contribute to the preservation and promotion of one of the world’s oldest warships is incredibly exciting. The rich history embodied by HMS Unicorn and the chance to engage with and educate the public about this unique vessel align perfectly with my passion for history and community involvement.

While volunteering at HMS Unicorn, I have developed a range of new skills and built upon existing ones. Notably, I have enhanced my ability to work both independently and as part of a team. I have also improved my public speaking skills through interactions with other team members. I played a key role in preparing the ship for the influx of visitors, ensuring the decks were impeccably cleaned and presented.

Volunteering at HMS Unicorn has been an incredibly enriching experience for numerous reasons. One of the highlights is the unique and ancient environment of the ship itself. Being surrounded by such a well-preserved piece of maritime history provides a deep sense of connection to the past and a tangible link to the ship’s storied heritage. It’s a privilege to help maintain and share this historic treasure with visitors.

The supportive and friendly staff at HMS Unicorn make the volunteer experience even more enjoyable. Their passion for the ship and dedication to its preservation are truly inspiring. They are always willing to share their knowledge and provide guidance, making it a fantastic learning environment. Volunteering at HMS Unicorn is a deeply rewarding experience that combines personal growth, community engagement, and the preservation of maritime heritage.
